I've been following the tragic case of Derrick Hallom, and my heart goes out to his family and friends who are still seeking justice and answers. I wanted to bring up the role of community programs—or the lack thereof—where Derrick lived. It's incredibly distressing to think about how many kids like Derrick might have been caught in the web of violence because there weren't enough safe spaces or opportunities for them. In neighborhoods plagued by gang activity and gun violence, having access to after-school programs, mentorship, or even job training could make a huge difference. I read about programs in other cities that have had success in steering young people away from trouble. Does anyone know if there were any such initiatives around Derrick's area, or if there have been improvements in the years since his passing? It seems like supporting our youth with more resources might be one way to honor Derrick's memory and prevent further tragedies. Sending strength and support to all those who continue to be affected by these relentless cycles of violence.
