I’ve been thinking a lot about how Austin Joel Edwards' family must have felt during those long days of the trial and sentencing of Willie Cory Godbolt. Losing an 11-year-old in such a violent and senseless way is unimaginable. These situations can bring a community together, but the pain never truly fades. I can’t stop wondering about the 15-year-old boy who survived by pretending to be dead. The trauma he must be carrying is unimaginable. I hope he is surrounded by support and love, finding ways to heal with time. It's heartening to hear that the community is stepping up to support the families. People often say time heals all wounds, but do the wounds ever fully heal after something like this? Let’s keep them all in our thoughts and continue to stand by them.
While reading about the tragedy in Lincoln County, I found myself thinking about the incredible bravery shown by Jordan Blackwell, who tragically lost his life that night. It’s a haunting reminder of how life's unpredictability can lead to unforeseen acts of courage. Jordan, just 18, reportedly shielded his cousin from harm. It's chilling to think how a young man, not far out of high school, still felt the instinct to protect. His actions were not just those of a teenager but of a hero in the truest sense. My heart goes out to his family having to endure such pain yet harbor immense pride over his selflessness. How do communities rebuild when they lose such bright lights? And how do we effectively honor these heroes in our day-to-day lives so they’re never forgotten?
In light of everything that happened on that tragic night, I stumbled across something that amazed me about Austin Joel Edwards. A few of his teachers shared stories about him, highlighting how he had such a big heart for his peers and always went out of his way to make those around him smile. It breaks my heart to think that someone so young and full of life was taken from this world so violently.
Hearing these anecdotes from his school community paints such a vivid picture of a kind-hearted boy who had his whole life ahead of him. I can't help but wonder how his kind nature might have impacted others had he been given the chance to grow up. While nothing can undo the pain his family and friends are enduring, I hope they find comfort in knowing how deeply loved and cherished Austin was by everyone who knew him.
It really makes you think about how precious and fragile life is, and how important it is to cherish our loved ones every day. Let’s keep Austin and all the victims in our thoughts, and continue to support each other through such senseless tragedies.
