Did anyone else feel the sheer weight of the numbers from that year? Seeing over 500 homicides in Chicago alone...it's impossible to wrap my mind around. Esteban Alvarez’s murder is more than a statistic; it was a real person lost to the senseless violence overtaking our city. My heart goes out to his family and everyone who knew him. It must have been terrifying living in a time when the community felt paralyzed by gang conflicts and gun violence. As someone who's watched neighborhoods shift and change, it's hard not to wonder what more could have been done back then to prevent these tragedies. We've come some way since 2012, but the echoes of that year's violence still resonate, and Esteban’s life is a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. How do we move forward in healing these communities and truly making a change?
