Hey everyone,
I've been digging through some old records about the 1910 case in Garland County involving the Chitwood brothers and Sheriff Houpt. What really struck me is the role of Governor George Washington Donaghey in all this. After the tragic loss of Sheriff Houpt, the Governor appointed Sid Houpt as the new sheriff. Given the volatile circumstances and the subsequent allegations against Sid Houpt for corruption, I'm curious about the process and considerations back then for appointing a new sheriff in such a charged environment.
Does anyone have insights on how such appointments were generally handled during that era? Was it common for a family member to be appointed in a situation like this, even when there might be emotions running high and a lot of unresolved issues? It just seems like a complex move that could either help stabilize the situation or add fuel to the fire.
Thanks for any thoughts or resources you might share!
