I've been thinking a lot about the surviving family members of Captain Bourland and Patrolman Howard. It's difficult to even imagine the immense grief they must have felt losing their loved ones in such a violent manner. This case happened so long ago, yet the pain these families went through is something that likely stayed with them for the rest of their lives. Captain Bourland's children are who really stick in my mind – losing a parent is never easy, especially under such tragic circumstances. The fact that they had to face the reality of their father's murder and grow up without him is just devastating. Let's also not forget Patrolman Howard's family, who had to come to terms with their loss as well. They remind us of the personal sacrifices families of law enforcement officers make every day. My heart is with all of them.
