I can't get the thought out of my head about how crime seems to be spiraling in Pine Bluff. 23 homicides by September 2019—it’s overwhelming to think about. Samario Shaw’s murder is just one part of this story, but it highlights how something bigger is happening in the city. I really feel for Shaw’s family and the families of all the victims who’ve had their loved ones taken from them. Seeing crime statistics is one thing, but when there’s a face and a story behind those numbers, it hits so much harder. It’s frustrating that despite the ongoing investigations, there are still no answers for these families. With each unsolved case, the feeling of safety in the community fades more. I hope someone with information steps forward soon so there can be a semblance of peace and closure for everyone affected. Stay safe, everyone.

I can't stop thinking about how this community truly needs more resources for the youth, not just to keep them engaged but to offer support and guidance. Samario Shaw was only 22, a young father who had a lot to live for and contribute. It crushes me to see another bright light extinguished in such a way. We have to consider the importance of mentorship programs and other interventions in Pine Bluff that could hopefully deter these senseless acts of violence. While everyone's hoping for justice for Samario, I feel we also need to rally together to create a safer environment for other young people. It's disturbingly clear that something needs to change to prevent the cycle of violence from continuing.
