Has anyone done any research on the route taken that day by Randle and A.J. Sr.? Specifically, the journey through Cuero and Gonzales up to the point where A.J. Sr. drove off alone with the kids? It just seems odd that they bought two large cans of lard during the trip. Was there something significant about that stop or the purchase itself? Did A.J. Sr. have any connections in those areas, or is it possible he hid something (or someone) there? It might be worth seeing if there are any local, historical records or missing person cases from those areas around that time. Also, has anyone tried to track down any descendants or relatives of William Randle Jr. who might be able to shed some light on minor details that weren't shared back then? Just throwing out ideas and hoping someone might have better luck digging into this angle.
