Hey everyone, I recently came across the disappearance case of Melville Edward Whittum from Camptonville, CA, which seems to have stumped investigators for decades now. One thing that caught my attention is his age at the time he went missing—82 years old. It got me thinking about how vulnerable elderly individuals are, especially those living alone. Have there been any similar cases where an elderly person just vanished without a trace? Was wondering if there might be some gap or issue in the way missing cases involving seniors are handled, both back then and now. It’s strange that so little info is available, even after all this time. Anyone else who knows more about how missing elderly cases are pursued? Maybe knowledge about the procedures back then could lend some insight. Would love to hear thoughts!

Has anyone looked into the possibility that Melville Edward Whittum might've been dealing with memory issues like dementia? In 1979, awareness and understanding of these conditions weren't what they are today. A significant number of older adults who go missing could have been confused and wandered off, and unfortunately, without proper mental health assessments back then, it could be even harder to trace his steps or predict his behavior. It might not bring us any closer to uncovering where he ended up, but I think considering this angle could help paint a broader picture of what might have happened. Does anyone have any insight on whether this theory was ever explored by investigators or mentioned by family members?

Just came across the case of Melville Edward Whittum again and can't stop thinking about how technology today might have helped. If only we had some of the tools back in 1979 that we do now - CCTV, smartphones, social media... I wonder if investigators would have had a better chance of figuring out what happened to him. It really makes you realize how much was left to chance back then. Does anyone know if they ever used any modern forensic methods on his case, even years later? Anything like that might bring new insights, and we'd love to hear if anyone has more info on whether they've tried revisiting it with today's tech.
