I can't stop thinking about the courage of the residents who lived through that terrible evening on July 21, 1980. It's indescribable to imagine being in such a situation, where your peaceful neighborhood suddenly transforms into a scene of chaos. Lois M. Kennedy Sima's story is a sad reminder of how quickly life can change. She was simply enjoying her evening on her front porch—a place where so many of us feel safe and at ease—when her life was taken. It's difficult to understand what her husband, Joseph, endured that day and in the days after, coping with the loss and his own injury. I can only hope the community offered him the support and strength he needed to persevere. It's important to remember these individuals as more than just names in an article; they were real people with loved ones who still feel their absence. May we continue to keep their memories alive and work towards a world where senseless acts of violence become a distant memory.
