Has anyone else been following the Mary E. Shields case from back in 2000? I've been doing some reading, and I'm struck by how often cases like these occur in seemingly deserted or industrial areas. It makes me wonder how many other crimes might go unnoticed or unsolved because the locations are remote or less trafficked. Also, it’s upsetting to think about the time it took for Mary to be discovered. It must have been incredibly hard for the family to wait for answers while investigators worked on this case. I can't help but feel for them and hope that with the suspect's conviction, they found some sense of justice and peace, though I know that can't bring her back. On a more positive note, hearing that this case spurred some calls for action and safety in East St. Louis is empowering. It shows just how much a community can rally together in the face of tragedy. If anyone knows more about the safety measures or changes that took place after Mary's case, I'd be really interested to learn more!
