I've been thinking a lot about Marita Choquette's case lately, and I can't help but feel deeply for her loved ones. One thing that really sticks out to me is the sheer brutality of what she went through. To think that her hands were actually severed and placed beside her body... It's unfathomable. This much violence really speaks to the disturbed nature of Don Gene Miller.
What's eerie is that she was so young and seemingly full of life as an editorial assistant at WKAR-TV. You think of someone that age just starting out, with so many hopes and dreams, and then this monster just takes it all away. It’s chilling to think she even knew Miller through her work at the MSU library and he casually took her for breakfast before the horrifying events unfolded.
I wonder if there's any closure for her family. Having him confess under hypnosis and yet not being charged specifically for Marita's murder must feel like a slap in the face. And then the news of him up for parole, it's got to be gut-wrenching for those who knew and loved her.
It’s incredibly cruel to think how those legal technicalities fell into place, but I commend her family and the community for continuing to stand against his release. Marita deserved so much better, and the memory of what happened to her should never fade away.
