I was saddened to read about the brutal events surrounding the Heller family tragedy. I can't even begin to imagine the trauma that John Wesley and his sisters went through, especially knowing that the perpetrator was someone they should have felt safe with. It’s sobering to think about the limitations of early 19th-century mental health evaluations and the impact they had on cases like Isaac Heller’s. The not guilty by reason of insanity plea in 1830 shows just how difficult it must have been to handle cases involving mental illness back then.
Today, we have a much better understanding and more resources available to manage mental health issues, but it makes you wonder if anything could have been done differently in those days to prevent such outcomes. My thoughts go out to anyone related to the Heller family, as this story serves as a solemn reminder of the need for progress in mental health care and legal reform.
