Growing up in the Chicago area, I've always been fascinated by the darker parts of its history, and Gacy's crimes were especially haunting. Recently, I've been reading more about the individual stories of each victim, and Darrell Samson's case particularly stands out to me. I was struck by the fact that Darrell was working for a carpeting company and had dreams of building a future with his fiancée. It makes me think about how easily his path crossed with Gacy's due to something seemingly innocuous like a job opportunity. It's terrifying to consider just how quickly someone can get caught up in a dangerous situation, all because they're trying to work hard and make a better life for themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine the agony his mother felt as she relentlessly searched for him. It's a chilling reminder that behind each headline or statistic about Gacy's victims, there are families whose lives were irreparably altered. I hope that as the years go by, we continue to remember not just the gruesomeness of these crimes, but also the vibrant lives and dreams that were tragically cut short. My heart goes out to all the families who had to endure such pain.
