I came across the tragic story of Martez Calloway's unsolved murder, and my heart truly goes out to his family and friends. It's incredibly frustrating and disheartening to know that so many cases in Detroit remain unresolved, leaving families without the closure they desperately need. The more I think about it, the more I wonder about the potential witnesses in these cases. I can’t help but ponder how many people might have seen something that night but are too afraid to come forward. The fear of retaliation is so real in these communities, and it's a significant barrier in seeking justice. It’s encouraging to see some efforts from the Detroit Cold Case Unit and the push for community involvement with the cold case webpage they started in 2019. But I constantly ask myself, what more can be done to protect those who want to help but are afraid? We need to create a sense of safety for witnesses to open up without fear of consequence. It might be a small step, but I believe it could make a big difference in bringing justice to families like Martez's.
