I was thinking about Davell Mathis today and how many families like his are caught up in the cycle of violence in our cities. It’s so frustrating that we still don’t know all the details of what happened to him or where exactly it took place. I can only imagine how his family must feel, dealing with the aftermath of such a tragedy without answers. Detroit in 2012 was practically a war zone with 387 homicides—numbers alone can’t describe the fear and unease people lived with daily. But behind each statistic is a person, a story, a grieving family. It feels like Davell’s story is just one of many buried under the weight of those overwhelming numbers. I really wish there was more focus on providing the resources needed to solve these cases. It’s the only way to offer any semblance of justice or peace to those who’ve lost loved ones. If anyone has more info on community groups working toward reducing violence in Detroit, please share. Every bit of effort counts, and maybe we can help bring some change.
