I’ve been following Beverly Lambert’s tragic case, and one thing that just gnaws at me is the young age of the suspect, Cortez Rice. It's distressing to think about how a 16-year-old could allegedly be involved in such a horrific crime. I wonder what led him to this point. Was there something missing in his life, or did he fall through the cracks somewhere? The community is right to rally around Beverly's family, and I hope they have the strength to face the difficult legal process ahead. But my thoughts also wander to how we can prevent such acts from happening in the first place, and what support systems we might put in place for youths at risk of ending up in such tragic circumstances. My heart aches for Beverly’s young son, growing up without his mother. It’s a painful reminder of the broader impact violent acts have on families and entire communities.
