It's been several years since the tragic passing of Simeon Anthony Smith, and my heart goes out to his family and everyone who loved him. I can't imagine the pain they must still feel. It’s such a sad reminder of how quickly life can be taken away.
One thing that keeps sticking with me is the fact that the altercation started on the bus. Public transportation is supposed to be a safe space, and it’s unsettling to think that an argument there escalated to such a tragic end. I wonder if there were any witnesses on the bus who saw the events unfold and might have been too scared to come forward.
If anyone here knows more about how these situations are generally handled, like encouraging witnesses to speak up safely, please share. I’d like to think there’s something that can be done to make buses and public spaces safer for everyone. My prayers are with Simeon’s family and friends.
