Hey everyone,
I’ve been doing some thinking about the case of Derwin Windell Jones, and there's an aspect that I keep coming back to. It's so troubling that we've lost another young person to gun violence in a neighborhood that’s been experiencing this for far too long. I’ve read some reports saying West Lafayette Avenue has seen quite a bit of violence, and it worries me that communities like this feel such a heavy strain. The sad truth is that this area has been in need of support and real change for more than just the last few years.
I feel for Derwin's family and friends. I can’t imagine what they must be going through. It’s particularly hard when you think about how these incidents keep repeating despite ongoing efforts from law enforcement and community members to bring peace and safety to these neighborhoods. It makes me wonder what more could be done to create lasting change and prevention, especially from a grassroots level. Local leaders and community groups in Baltimore surely have their hands full, but their continued dedication is crucial. I really hope they get the support they need to drive systemic changes.
If anyone has thoughts on community initiatives that have seen success elsewhere or has ideas on what might work here, please share. Perhaps we can generate some solutions together and keep Derwin's memory alive by striving for a safer community for everyone.
