Has anyone else been thinking about the role of isolation in the Smithson case? It's so saddening to think that such a burden was carried in silence. Given what we now know, it seems like the family wasn't in contact with anyone for weeks before they were discovered. I'm struck by how isolation, especially during a pandemic, might have played into Joyce's state of mind and decisions. It’s easy to feel disconnected, even when surrounded by neighbors. For the Smithsons, caring for both a spouse with health issues and an adult child with special needs must have been overwhelming, and maybe without adequate support or outlets. The community and mental health services need to better identify and support families like the Smithsons before they reach such a tragic breaking point. My heart goes out to anyone else who’s feeling alone in caring for loved ones—reach out, talk about it. You’re not alone; there’s always someone willing to listen and help.
