I’ve been reading up on the 1975 Smith River tragedy, and I can’t stop thinking about Ella Beam, the young maid from Brookings. She was only 22 and just starting her life. It’s so unfair that she was caught up in something so horrific simply because she came out to see if she could help. I keep wondering what kind of person she was and what dreams she might have had. My heart truly goes out to her family and friends who must have been devastated by her loss. If anyone has any memories or knew her, I’d love to hear more about her and celebrate her life a little more. It’s so important we remember the victims as real people with stories and not just names in a tragic event.
