I've been thinking a lot about Patrolman August Baker's impact on Cumberland before that tragic night. It sounds like he was truly committed to his role and had been serving for eight years. In a time and area where tensions were high, especially around places like the canal wharf with its notorious saloons, Baker must have faced numerous challenges daily. His dedication reminds me of the countless officers today who put themselves in harm's way to maintain peace. I can't imagine the kind of courage it took for him to continue his duties in such a volatile environment. It’s heartening to know that his legacy is honored with a monument now, but I can't help but think of the pain his family must have endured, especially his wife Eliza. Wishing peace and healing to his descendants who continue to carry his story forward.
