Has anyone come across any detailed reports on the stability issues with the Destination or other vessels like it? I saw somewhere that the initial investigation mentioned some stability problems with the boat, but I’m curious if that’s common across other fishing boats in the region or even in the fishing industry overall. Is this a systemic issue that regulatory bodies should be addressing more proactively? I can’t help but wonder if there are more vessels out there sailing with similar risks because they don’t meet minimum standards. It’s deeply concerning that a boat could be out on such a dangerous mission with these kinds of potential failings. Thoughts?
Is anyone else curious about the bait situation on the Destination? I know they picked up an extra 10,000 pounds of bait for their crab pots, but I can't help but wonder if that might've contributed to the ship's stability issues. Did the extra weight make the vessel more susceptible to the freezing spray? It's tragic that the AIS stopped transmitting so suddenly and the Emergency Beacon went off just one minute later. It couldn't have been much time between things starting to go wrong and the vessel going down. Keen to hear thoughts on how much of an impact that bait load might have had.
It's been years since the tragic loss of the Destination and its crew, yet I can't help but wonder about the impact that the overloading of bait might have had on the vessel's stability. 10,000 pounds is A LOT, especially when you consider the icy conditions reported. While authorities concluded that icing was a major factor, could the additional weight from the bait have exacerbated the situation, potentially tipping the scales towards disaster? It seems like a dangerous mix of elements that ultimately made the boat more vulnerable in the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. The challenges crab fishermen face are daunting enough without compounding risks. Thoughts on how such loading decisions are typically made and balanced with weather conditions?
