The Fateful Voyage of the Starbound
Mark Doughty, a 33‑year‑old fisherman from Gloucester, Massachusetts, embarked on what would become his final voyage aboard the Starbound, a herring trawler owned by Atlantic Mariner Inc. On the night of August 5, 2001, the Starbound was approximately 130 miles off Cape Ann when it was struck by a much larger vessel—identified as the Russian oil tanker Virgo. The collision, occurring at roughly 1 a.m., sent the trawler sinking within seconds.
A Crew Caught Unprepared
According to the sole survivor, Captain Joseph Marcantonio, two crew members—Mark Doughty and Tom Frontiero—were asleep below deck when the collision struck on the port side.
