On November 4, 1995, 66-year-old Margie Shaw Boone visited the home of her boyfriend, 79-year-old Hoyle Smith, in Sanford, North Carolina. What began as a routine visit turned into a perplexing disappearance that has haunted the community for decades. Both Boone and Smith vanished without a trace, leaving behind a trail of questions and a community desperate for answers.
Concern grew when friends and family couldn't reach the couple. A subsequent check of Smith's residence revealed alarming signs: bloodstains and indications of a struggle inside the home. Additionally, Smith's car was missing, later found abandoned in a Fayetteville bar parking lot. These findings painted a grim picture, suggesting that foul play was involved in their disappearance.
Five days after the couple's disappearance, on November 9, 1995, Donald Abercrombie engaged in a 17-hour standoff with law enforcement in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Upon surrendering, Abercrombie became the prime suspect in the case. Investigators linked him to the crime scene through DNA evidence and charged him with robbery and two counts of first-degree murder. Abercrombie confessed to the killings, claiming he buried Boone and Smith in the woods near his residence in Spring Lake, North Carolina. Despite extensive searches, their remains were never located.
In February 1997, a jury convicted Abercrombie of both murders. He received two life sentences, although prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
