Stephanie Marie Gant-Brady, affectionately known as "Penny," was a distinguished figure in Baltimore, Maryland. Born on October 17, 1944, she broke barriers as the first Black woman to attain the rank of lieutenant in the Maryland National Guard and served on the Governor's Committee for the Handicapped. Despite her accomplishments, Stephanie vanished without a trace on April 8, 1984, leaving behind a perplexing mystery that endures to this day.
On the day of her disappearance, Stephanie was last seen at her residence in the 4600 block of Horizon Circle in Baltimore's Woodlawn area. Her male companion claimed she had traveled to London to write a book. However, this assertion raised immediate suspicions. Stephanie had not obtained a passport, failed to collect her last paycheck, and left all her personal belongings behind, including her cane and wheelchair—essential items given her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
Stephanie's life was marked by dedication to education and public service. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Morgan State University and was pursuing a master's degree at the University of Baltimore at the time of her disappearance. Professionally, she worked as a substitute teacher in middle and elementary schools, impacting countless young lives. Her commitment to advocacy was evident through her involvement with the Governor's Committee for the Handicapped, reflecting her passion for inclusivity and support for those with disabilities.
The circumstances surrounding Stephanie's disappearance have led investigators to suspect foul play. The inconsistencies in her companion's account, coupled with the abandonment of her essential medical aids, suggest that her departure was neither planned nor voluntary. Despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement, including the Baltimore County Police Department and the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP), the case remains unsolved. ...Read More
