On January 8, 1984, 31-year-old Sandra Kay Ross left her Apex, North Carolina, home around noon to run a simple errand: pick up medication for her 16-month-old daughter’s diaper rash. She told her husband, Robert Ross, that she was heading to the local pharmacy. When she failed to return within an hour, Robert grew concerned and went to search for her. He discovered her 1976 Chevrolet Malibu abandoned in the parking lot of Cary Village Mall, near the entrance to the Treasure Drug Store. Inside the car, her purse was found, but there was no sign of Sandra.
Authorities were promptly notified, and an investigation commenced. Despite extensive efforts, including interviews with friends and co-workers who had attended a party at the Ross residence the night before, no substantial leads emerged. It was reported that the party ended around midnight, and Sandra had been entertaining guests while Robert assisted in caring for their daughter. Investigators confirmed that Sandra never made it into the store, as there were no records of her purchasing anything that day.
Sandra Ross was a dedicated nurse at Rex Hospital and was described by those who knew her as a loving mother and wife.
