Kelly High School, Cheryl was diligently working at the Rhodes Pump-Ur-Own Station to fund her college education. Described as a model employee, she had been with the gas station for over a year, consistently demonstrating reliability and dedication.
The Fateful Day: April 17, 1979
On the morning of April 17, 1979, Cheryl began her shift at 6:00 a.m. At approximately 11:20 a.m., she made a routine call to her mother, discussing plans for dinner and sewing that evening. Her mother noted that Cheryl was in good spirits during their conversation. However, between 11:40 and 11:50 a.m., Cheryl vanished without a trace. Her purse and checkbook were found inside the station, her car remained parked outside with the keys inside, and approximately $480 was missing from the cash register.
