A Routine Flight Turns Tragic
On October 25, 2018, James Edwin "Jamie" Mitchum Jr., a 58-year-old resident of Saint Stephen, South Carolina, embarked on what was expected to be a routine flight to the Bahamas. Accompanied by four others, Mitchum boarded a Piper PA-31 aircraft that departed from Robert F. Swinnie Airport in Andrews, South Carolina. The twin-engine plane, identified by tail number N555PM, was en route over the Atlantic when the pilot reported an in-flight emergency. Shortly after, the aircraft vanished from radar approximately 110 miles southeast of Charleston.
A Man of Many Talents and Passions
James Mitchum Jr. was more than just a passenger on that ill-fated flight; he was a pillar of his community. Born on December 15, 1959, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Mitchum was the owner and operator of Mitchum's Construction, Inc. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched by his adventurous nature. A licensed pilot for both helicopters and airplanes, he also volunteered with the Berkeley County Rescue Squad.
