A Tragic Day in Alaska’s Skies
On July 3, 1997, a small aircraft carrying six individuals crashed approximately 50 yards offshore on the east side of Skagway Harbor in the Taiya Inlet, near Haines, Alaska. The crash resulted in the rescue of two survivors and the recovery of two deceased individuals. However, two passengers, including 51-year-old John Blanda, were never found and remain missing to this day.

John Blanda was a businessman, father, and husband with a deep commitment to his community. Born into a family that immigrated from Sicily in the early 1900s, Blanda established a successful construction company that grew to international prominence by the late 1980s.
