A Midnight Journey Across Lake Iliamna

On July 28, 2007, Clinton Abarca, a 26-year-old Alaska Native from Nondalton, embarked on a late-night journey across Lake Iliamna, Alaska’s largest lake, with three companions: Lance Hobson, Chad Rawls, and Vince Rickteroff. Departing from Igiugig around midnight in a small skiff, their destination was Kokhanok, approximately 40 miles away. The lake, known for its vastness and unpredictable weather, would soon become the setting for a tragic and mysterious event.

The Capsizing Incident

As the group navigated the lake, the boat's anchor unexpectedly deployed, catching on the lake bottom. This sudden snag caused the skiff's bow to submerge, leading the vessel to flip at least twice. The men found themselves clinging to the overturned boat in the frigid waters, hoping for rescue. Lance Hobson, notably not wearing a life jacket, managed to stay atop the capsized boat for three days before being rescued. He later recounted that his decision not to wear a life jacket may have prevented him from swimming away and succumbing to the cold, as he believed might have happened to his friends.

The Aftermath and Search Efforts

Following Hobson's rescue on July 30, 2007, search teams intensified efforts to locate the remaining men. On July 31, the body of Vince Rickteroff was discovered floating with a life jacket approximately three miles from the lake's southwest shore. Despite extensive aerial and water searches, Clinton Abarca and Chad Rawls remained missing. The Alaska State Troopers eventually presumed them deceased, citing the lake's cold temperatures and the duration of their disappearance.

Clinton Abarca's Profile

At the time of his disappearance, Clinton Abarca was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. His case is registered with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) under case number MP66349. The Alaska Department of Public Safety continues to list him as missing, with the incident categorized under environmental circumstances....Read More
