The Final Voyage of the F/V Active
On June 21, 1992, the 46-foot trawler Active embarked on what would tragically become its final voyage. Commanded by 36-year-old skipper Milo Davis of Juneau, Alaska, and accompanied by 19-year-old crewman Nick Plaskon, the vessel was operating near Grand Island, approximately 15 miles south of Juneau. The Active was engaged in trawling operations when its fishing gear became entangled on the ocean floor, leading to the vessel's sinking. Both Davis and Plaskon were lost to the sea, and their bodies were never recovered.
The loss of Milo Davis resonated deeply within the Juneau community. As a seasoned fisherman, Davis was well-known and respected among his peers. The sudden disappearance of the Active and its crew served as a stark reminder of the perils faced by those who make their living from the sea. The incident underscored the inherent risks of commercial fishing in Alaska's treacherous waters, where unpredictable weather and challenging sea conditions are a constant threat.
