On the night of October 6, 2013, 28-year-old Peter McNeal, a tugboat crewman from Wasilla, Alaska, embarked on what should have been a routine skiff ride from the small-boat launch at Ship Creek to the anchored tugboat Sam B near the Port of Anchorage. Shortly before midnight, as the skiff approached the vessel, McNeal stood up, lost his balance, and fell overboard into the frigid waters of Cook Inlet. The strong tidal currents swiftly carried him away, and despite immediate efforts, he vanished into the darkness .
Crewmembers aboard the Sam B promptly contacted the U.S. Coast Guard to report McNeal's fall. A comprehensive search operation was launched, involving multiple agencies, including the Anchorage Fire Department, the Alaska Air National Guard, and several civilian vessels. Searchers covered a 10-square-mile area over approximately 18 hours, utilizing helicopters, boats, and shoreline patrols. However, the combination of darkness, swift currents, and challenging weather conditions hampered the search efforts .
The environmental conditions on the night of McNeal's disappearance were particularly treacherous. Cook Inlet is known for its extreme tidal fluctuations, with currents reaching up to 9 knots. At the time of the incident, the area was experiencing a 33-foot tide, 1- to 2-foot seas, 20-knot winds, and water temperatures around 46 degrees Fahrenheit. These factors significantly reduced the likelihood of survival and complicated rescue operations .
Initial reports indicated that McNeal was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. However, subsequent information suggested he might have been wearing one beneath his coat, though this could not be confirmed. The uncertainty surrounding his use of a life jacket raised questions about adherence to safety protocols during crew transfers, especially under hazardous conditions ....Read More
