A Life Rooted in Dillingham
Rodney Allen, born on November 29, 1971, in Dillingham, Alaska, was a member of the Alaska Native/American Indian community. Growing up in this remote fishing town, Rodney was deeply connected to the sea—a bond that would ultimately define his fate. Like many in Dillingham, he found work in the commercial fishing industry, a cornerstone of the local economy and culture.
The Fateful Day: February 18, 1996
On February 18, 1996, while working aboard the fishing vessel Bluefin, Rodney was engaged in the arduous task of setting crab pots approximately 60 miles west-northwest of St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea. Tragically, he fell overboard during this operation. At the time of the incident, Rodney was not wearing a survival suit, a critical piece of safety equipment designed to protect against the frigid waters of the Bering Sea.
