On January 26, 1997, Floyd Roger Hurst, a 43-year-old Oxford, Alabama resident, left his home on Sunny Eve Road with plans to attend a Super Bowl party at the Red Horse Lounge in nearby Anniston. He never arrived. His blue 1990 Dodge Caravan was later found abandoned at the Georgia Welcome Center off Interstate 20, but there was no sign of Floyd. His disappearance marked the beginning of a 17-year mystery that would haunt his family and the local community.

A Close-Knit Community Shaken

Floyd's sudden disappearance sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community of Oxford. Friends and family were left bewildered, unable to comprehend how a man could vanish without a trace. The last person to see him was his ex-wife, who became concerned when a friend called to ask why Floyd hadn't shown up at the party. Despite extensive searches and investigations, no substantial leads emerged, and the case grew cold.

A Neighbor Under Suspicion

From the outset, suspicion fell on Jack David "Jackie" Stovall II, Floyd's next-door neighbor and acquaintance. Stovall had a history of violence, including an incident where he allegedly broke Floyd's brother's arm. Six months after Floyd's disappearance, Stovall was arrested for attempting to hire someone to kill Barry Jackson, a friend of Floyd's.
