A Routine Voyage Turns Tragic
On April 19, 1992, Emanual Charliaga, a 33-year-old Alaska Native from Kodiak Island, embarked on what was intended to be a routine skiff journey from Kodiak to the nearby village of Ouzinkie. Accompanying him were two other local men: 22-year-old Philip Balluta and 21-year-old Robin Squartsoff. The trio set out across the often unpredictable waters of the Gulf of Alaska, a route familiar to many residents who rely on small boats for inter-island travel. However, they never reached their destination, and none of the men were ever seen again.
Presumed Drowned, But No Closure
Despite extensive search efforts by local authorities and community members, no trace of the skiff or the three men was ever found. The Alaska Department of Public Safety officially listed the case as an environmental disappearance, with the men presumed drowned .
