A Routine Day Turns Tragic
On December 21, 2000, Steven Oldham, a 48-year-old crane operator, was engaged in a standard dredging operation on the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. Employed by Bath Iron Works, he was part of a team preparing the riverbed for the installation of a floating dry dock. Tragically, the crane he was operating tipped over, plunging into the river. While a co-worker was rescued, Steven was not found, and despite the recovery of the crane, his whereabouts remain unknown.
The Immediate Aftermath and Search Efforts
Following the incident, immediate search and rescue operations were launched. Divers and salvage teams scoured the river, and the crane was eventually recovered.
