On the evening of January 28, 2007, 48-year-old Darrel Wayne Kempf departed from North Cove, Washington, intending to return to his home in Graham, Washington. Driving his blue Plymouth Voyager van, Kempf was expected to complete the journey without incident. However, he never arrived, and by the following day, his family reported him missing .
Later on January 29, Kempf's van was discovered overturned on a remote beach near the North Cove Jetty along State Route 105, just north of the Shoalwater Indian Reservation. The vehicle had apparently veered off the road, flipped, and landed on its roof. Intriguingly, there were no signs of injury or Kempf's presence at the scene. A belt was found tied to the steering wheel, and search dogs briefly picked up a scent trail on the road above, which quickly dissipated .
At the time of his disappearance, Kempf operated a used-car business named Triad Marketing. Financial records revealed that he had borrowed substantial sums, potentially up to $3 million, from various finance companies. Following his disappearance, numerous vehicles from his dealership vanished, prompting investigations into possible fraudulent activities. Authorities later confirmed that Kempf had engaged in a scheme involving accepting cars for consignment, using their titles to secure loans, and then selling the vehicles to third parties without repaying the loans .
A few days after Kempf went missing, his family received a letter purportedly written by him and mailed by a friend from his Army days. The letter detailed Kempf's financial troubles, including debts to loan sharks, and expressed fear for his safety. It suggested that if the family was reading the letter, he was likely deceased.
