On May 23, 1985, 14-year-old Jody Lee Ledkins vanished in Kansas City, Missouri. She was last seen walking northbound on Winchester Avenue from 14th Street after leaving her friend's house. That night, she had called her mother, Karen Stratton, around 10:00 p.m., asking for a ride home. Karen couldn't pick her up due to lack of transportation, and Jody mentioned she would find another ride. She was never seen or heard from again.
Jody's upbringing was marked by instability. Her parents divorced in 1981, and her mother's subsequent remarriage also ended in divorce. By 1985, Jody and her mother were attempting to rebuild their relationship. However, Jody had a history of truancy and had been placed in a juvenile probation program after an incident involving a security guard in 1984.
After Jody failed to return home, Karen contacted Jody's deputy juvenile officer (DJO) to report her missing. The DJO advised giving Jody the weekend to cool off, suspecting she was upset. Unbeknownst to Karen, the DJO did not file a missing person report with the police. It wasn't until two years later, in 1987, that law enforcement officially began investigating Jody's disappearance. This delay severely hampered the investigation.
In 1989, Jody's probation officer received a letter purportedly from Jody, stating she was fine and might explain her departure someday. Karen compared the handwriting to previous letters but couldn't confirm its authenticity. Between 1993 and 1995, Karen received threatening phone calls demanding money for Jody's return and threatening harm if she didn't comply. The calls were traced to a Kansas City payphone, but the caller was never identified. ...Read More
