On May 14, 2017, 78-year-old Willie Herman Toomer attended his regular Sunday service at Stewart Chapel United Methodist Church in Huger, South Carolina. After the service, a fellow parishioner gave him a ride home, dropping him off around 12:30 p.m. Toomer was expected to meet friends later that evening, but he never arrived. The next morning, concerned family members found his home unlocked and empty, with no signs of disturbance or forced entry.
