On August 6, 1995, nine-year-old Jack Daniel Phillips, affectionately known as "J.D.," vanished near the Aspen Glen picnic grounds in Big Bear Lake, California. Jack was picnicking with his mother, her live-in boyfriend, and his younger half-brother. After a disagreement with the adults, Jack expressed frustration to a witness, stating he was tired of arguing. He was last seen between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. walking back toward the picnic area, but he never returned.
Jack's disappearance prompted an extensive search of the surrounding area. Authorities scoured a 20-square-mile radius around the picnic grounds and his nearby home on foot, horseback, and by air. Despite these efforts, no trace of Jack was found. He had no history of running away, and foul play was suspected due to the circumstances of his disappearance.

Convicted child killer James Crummel emerged as the prime suspect in Jack's disappearance. Crummel, a known serial sexual abuser with a criminal record dating back to the 1960s, lived just blocks from the Aspen Glen picnic area at the time Jack vanished. He later told a cellmate that he had murdered Jack and suggested he disposed of the body in the ocean. Crummel was also linked to other child disappearances and was convicted of the 1979 murder of 13-year-old Jamey Trotter. He was sentenced to death in 2004 but died by suicide in 2012, leaving no note. ...Read More
