A Dedicated Worker and Loving Daughter

Brenwanda “Brennie” Smith, a 24-year-old African-American woman, was known for her dedication to her job and her family. Employed as a bus driver for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) since 1994, she worked as a "hold-down operator," filling in for other drivers as needed. Her commitment to her work was evident in her long hours and her goal of saving money to move into her own apartment. In January 1997, she achieved this goal, relocating to Lynnewood Gardens in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania.

The Day She Disappeared

On February 18, 1997, Brenwanda began her day early, reporting to work at 4:00 a.m. Around noon, while driving the Route C bus, she was involved in a minor traffic accident on Broad Street near Girard Avenue. She returned to the depot to complete an accident report and concluded her shift around 1:30 p.m. However, she was last seen at approximately 7:00 p.m. near the Luzerne depot at Old York Road and Luzerne Avenue in Philadelphia. Co-workers offered her a ride home, but she declined, stating she already had a ride arranged. Brenwanda did not own a car and typically relied on co-workers, her father, or public transportation for commuting.

A Mysterious Absence

Brenwanda never arrived at her apartment that evening and has not been heard from since. Her disappearance was out of character; she was known to be responsible and maintained regular communication with her family and friends. Her father, Harvey Smith, expressed the family's belief that she was still alive but unable to reach out due to unknown circumstances. Despite efforts, including distributing fliers and offering a reward, there were no substantial leads in the case.

A Possible Connection to a Serial Killer

Investigators considered the possibility of a connection between Brenwanda's disappearance and Juan Covington, a former SEPTA employee diagnosed with schizophrenia. Covington had asked Brenwanda out on a date, which she declined. Shortly before her disappearance, she was reportedly seen arguing with him at the SEPTA yard. In 2005, Covington confessed to multiple shootings, resulting in three deaths and two injuries, and was sentenced to three consecutive life terms. However, he has not admitted involvement in Brenwanda's case, and authorities have not found evidence linking him to her disappearance. ...Read More
