On the night of October 9, 1995, Amtrak's Sunset Limited embarked on its usual route across the vast expanses of the American Southwest. As the train traversed the remote desert near Palo Verde, Arizona, an unforeseen catastrophe struck. The train derailed, causing two locomotives and eight of its twelve cars to veer off the tracks. Four of these cars plummeted approximately 30 feet off a trestle bridge into a dry riverbed below. Amidst the chaos, Mitchell Bates, a dedicated sleeping car attendant, lost his life, and seventy-eight passengers sustained injuries, twelve of them serious.
In the immediate aftermath, investigators uncovered alarming evidence suggesting the derailment was not an accident but a premeditated act of sabotage. Four typewritten notes were discovered near the crash site, each vehemently criticizing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for their roles in the 1993 Waco Siege. The notes were signed by a group calling themselves the "Sons of the Gestapo." Further examination of the tracks revealed that the rails had been intentionally shifted out of alignment and then reconnected with wires. This tampering maintained the track circuit, effectively bypassing safety systems designed to detect such anomalies, indicating that the perpetrators possessed a sophisticated understanding of railway operations.
The method employed in the Palo Verde derailment bore a chilling resemblance to a previous act of sabotage: the 1939 wreck of the City of San Francisco train. In that incident, saboteurs had similarly tampered with the tracks, resulting in the tragic loss of 24 lives. The uncanny similarities between the two events raised concerns about a possible copycat crime or a resurgence of anti-establishment sentiments manifesting through violent means.
Despite extensive investigations, the true identity and existence of the "Sons of the Gestapo" remain shrouded in mystery. The group's name does not correspond to any known organizations, leading some investigators to speculate that it might have been a fictitious entity created to mislead authorities or to mask other motives, such as robbery or personal vendettas. The lack of additional evidence or subsequent claims of responsibility has only deepened the enigma surrounding this shadowy group....Read More
