South Trimble Jr., born on August 21, 1896, in Frankfort, Kentucky, was the son of South Trimble Sr. and Caroline Isabelle Allan. Following in his father's footsteps—who served as a U.S. Congressman and Clerk of the House of Representatives—Trimble Jr. dedicated his life to public service. He pursued a legal career in Washington, D.C., where he became known for his involvement in high-profile investigations, most notably the Senate Commerce Committee's inquiry into the 1937 Hindenburg disaster.

The Tragic Night of December 31, 1974

On the evening of December 31, 1974, 78-year-old South Trimble Jr. and his wife, Elaine, attended a New Year's Eve service at a local Catholic church. After the service, they returned to their residence in the 3000 block of Tilden Street NW. Trimble dropped his wife at the front entrance before proceeding to park their car in the basement garage.
