On the evening of May 15, 2019, the vibrant community of Southeast Washington, D.C., was shaken by a violent incident that would leave a lasting void. At approximately 11:36 p.m., Berner "Bud" Johnson, a 48-year-old U.S. Senate staffer and cherished youth baseball coach, was involved in an altercation in the 100 block of K Street, SE. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Johnson sustaining severe injuries. Despite immediate medical attention and hospitalization, he succumbed to his injuries on May 21, 2019.
A Distinguished Career on Capitol Hill
Johnson's professional life was marked by dedication and service. Beginning his career at the tender age of 18, he joined the U.S. Senate's document room in the Hart Senate Office Building. Over the years, his commitment and hard work led him to the position of Deputy Director, a role he held for over three decades.
