Discovery of the Crime Scene
In the early hours of March 1, 2014, Denver police officers responded to a distress call on the 5300 block of North Memphis Street. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless bodies of two men inside a condominium. The Denver Coroner's Office later identified the victims as 31-year-old Richard E. Sims and 23-year-old Dontai R. Carter. Both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head, leading authorities to classify the incident as a double homicide.
Immediate Investigative Efforts
Following the grim discovery, detectives initiated a search for a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe, believed to have been taken from the crime scene. The vehicle, bearing Colorado license plates 615-IQS, was located later that afternoon in Aurora. Upon spotting law enforcement, several individuals fled from the SUV.
