On November 14, 2016, the life of 37-year-old Jerry Ezell Harbin was tragically ended in a fatal shooting in West Oakland. At approximately 1:08 p.m., Oakland police responded to reports of gunfire in the 1100 block of 32nd Street. Upon arrival, they discovered Harbin suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate efforts of officers and paramedics, Harbin was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden and violent nature of his death sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family and friends in deep mourning.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators faced significant challenges in identifying and apprehending the suspect. Initial information was scarce, and leads were limited. However, on January 19, 2017, Oakland police released surveillance photographs capturing images of the suspect fleeing the scene shortly after the murder. The individual was described as a Black male in his late 20s, standing between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall, with a slim build, black hair, and a beard. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark T-shirt, jeans, and dark shoes. The suspect was last seen entering a white 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, which he used to flee the area. Despite the release of these images and descriptions, the suspect remained unidentified, and no arrests were made.
The murder of Jerry Ezell Harbin left a void in the West Oakland community. Friends, family, and neighbors grappled with the loss of a man they described as caring and outgoing. In an effort to encourage individuals with information to come forward, the Oakland Police Department, in collaboration with Crime Stoppers of Oakland, offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. The hope was that this incentive would motivate witnesses or those with knowledge of the crime to assist law enforcement in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
Beyond the headlines and police reports, Jerry Harbin was a beloved member of his community. He was known for his dedication to local youth, serving as a baseball coach at Poplar Park. Those who knew him recall his infectious sense of humor, his unwavering commitment to his family, and his remarkable memory. Harbin was an alumnus of McClymonds High School and was deeply rooted in the neighborhood he grew up in. His untimely death not only robbed his family of a cherished member but also deprived the community of a mentor and friend....Read More
