Discovery of the Crime Scene
On the evening of Sunday, June 8, 2003, at approximately 6:52 pm, Gainesville police responded to a distressing call at 1115 SW 3rd Ave. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of 57-year-old Jay Cecil Thames Jr. inside his residence. The building, a quadplex comprising several apartments, showed no signs of forced entry; however, the front door was found unsecured. Thames had been brutally beaten to death, a crime that sent shockwaves through the local community.
Profile of the Victim
Jay Cecil Thames Jr. was a white male known for his generosity and open-heartedness. He often extended a helping hand to those in need, frequently allowing homeless individuals to take refuge in his home. This compassionate nature made him a well-known figure among Gainesville's less fortunate.
