On April 25, 1971, 13-year-old Carol Spinks was sent by her older sister to purchase groceries at a nearby 7-Eleven, just a half-mile from their Southeast Washington, D.C. home. Despite the short distance, Carol never returned. Her disappearance marked the beginning of a series of tragic events that would grip the community.
The Grim Discovery
Six days after her disappearance, Carol's body was found on a grassy embankment near the northbound lanes of I-295, approximately 1,500 feet south of Suitland Parkway. The location was alarmingly close to her home, intensifying the community's anguish. An autopsy revealed that Carol had been sexually assaulted and strangled. Notably, she was found clothed but without her shoes, a detail that would become a chilling signature in subsequent cases.
