The Initial Discovery
On the night of July 21, 2017, Birmingham police officers responded to a call in the 1300 block of 21st Street North. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of 57-year-old Vergil Angela Cook inside her apartment. Initial observations suggested that Cook had been deceased for several days, and her death was presumed to be from natural causes. However, a subsequent examination revealed a more sinister cause: Cook had been fatally stabbed.
Early Investigations and Person of Interest
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, detectives began piecing together Cook's final days. Their investigation led them to identify Timothy Stone, a 62-year-old Birmingham resident, as a person of interest. Stone and Cook were known to be in a romantic relationship, which placed him under scrutiny.
