A Community Staple Lost
In the heart of Atlanta's Castleberry Hill neighborhood, 62-year-old Obie "Mr. O" Phillips was a familiar face. Known for his frequent visits to the JVC Grocery Store on McDaniel Street, he often stopped by to purchase lottery tickets and snacks. Despite his struggles with gout, which required him to walk with a cane, Mr. O maintained a cheerful disposition that endeared him to both store employees and fellow patrons. His niece, Collette Phillips, fondly recalled, "He always made us laugh, even if he was sad, he made you laugh."
The Fateful Morning
On the morning of October 8, 2014, tragedy struck. As Mr. O stood outside the JVC Grocery Store, a blue car drove by, and shots were fired from the passenger window. In the chaos, a bullet struck Mr. O, who, due to his limited mobility, was unable to escape the gunfire. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
